Jimmy Barnes has released a new version of Rose Tattoo’s Rock ’n’ Roll Is King as a tribute to his longtime friend Gary Angry Anderson, who died on September 21, 2026, at age 79. In announcing the release, Barnes said the recording had been completed before Anderson’s death and was originally considered for an earlier album.
Barnes explained that he had spoken with Anderson about the cover and had hoped to play the finished version for him. That opportunity never came, giving the song a more personal meaning after the Rose Tattoo frontman’s death.
The connection between Barnes and Anderson stretched back decades. Cold Chisel and Rose Tattoo came up through the same Australian rock scene, often sharing stages, equipment, crews and the demanding touring circuit that helped shape both bands.
Barnes described Anderson as a close friend and a major presence in Australian rock music. The tribute also has a charitable purpose, with proceeds from the recording going to Support Act, an organization that provides assistance to people working across Australia’s music industry.
